The SCOTT Scale RC

STAY UP TO DATE

LIGHTWEIGHT PERFECTION

The SCOTT Scale RC is the perfect blend of stiffness, light weight, and 30 years of carbon expertise. These characteristics, encompassed in an uncompromising frame design decisively accelerate the Scale away from the pack with every pedal stroke.

FRAME DESIGN

INDUSTRY LEADING PRODUCT DESIGN

The SCOTT Scale’s design was uncompromisingly subjected to our pursuit of perfection and drive for pure efficiency, strictly following the guiding principle of “Form follows Function”. In our search for the ultimate, yet most simple construction, we’ve centered the design around the essentials by balancing the bike’s DNA in order to create a whole new breed of XC bike. The result is a straightforward and clear design, which provides the all-new Scale with its distinctive character and aggressive look: a bike that proudly shows off its characteristics.

Geometry

One of the main objectives was to provide a geometry that optimizes ride position and handling characteristics for a wider group of riders and course profiles. Working with athletes like Nino Schurter, Kate Courtney and the rest of the SCOTT-SRAM Racing Team, we were able to pinpoint exactly what we wanted: A geometry inspired by the race-winning geometry of our World Championship-winning full suspension race bike, the Spark RC, but optimized to carve out the characteristics of a thoroughbred XC hardtail.

CARBON ENGINEERING

The SCOTT Scale is a true showcase of carbon craftmanship. Balancing the characteristics of different carbon fibers creates a specific mix for each section of the bike and develops the bike’s character. Balancing the sophisticated mix of different carbon fibers in one system, and letting the materials do what they are meant to do, is a showcase of the carbon expertise we’ve gained over 30 years paired with our constant strive for innovation.

CARBON ENGINEERING

In areas where stiffness is of the highest priority, a higher proportion of Ultra High and High Modulus carbon fibers are used, withstanding high forces with less deflection. This applies for main stiffness areas like bottom bracket and head tube.

On the other end of the spectrum, fibers with a higher ductility and flexibility come into play to achieve a certain level of compliance where needed in order to allow for a well-rounded riding experience.

Monocoque Construction

The SCOTT Scale RC’s monocoque construction enables a production using only one mold for the main section of the bike, the front triangle. Applying our carbon expertise, the SCOTT Scale therefore consists of only 3 separate pieces molded together. This directly translates into an increased level of efficiency due to the reduced number of junctions required therefore decreasing weight while keeping the superior stiffness – something we’re always aiming for with hardtail race bikes. With the full frame constructed as a system, the monocoque design enables the frame to handle forces as a whole.

Weight

When it’s about advancing a product at the highest level, it all comes down to marginal details. These are what make a real impact on the performance of both the bike and rider. It’s more than an advantage measured in single grams. A meticulously developed system, balancing an optimal blend of stiffness, strength and just the right amount of compliance, is what we were after. With the SCOTT Scale RC, we hit the sweet spot and optimized weight throughout the SCOTT Scale RC product range.

Lightweight Zone vs Stiffness Zone

Stiffness is influenced mainly from the downtube through the bottom bracket and into the chain stays, making up what we call the stiffness zone of the Scale RC. This becomes even more applicable when constructing a hardtail like the SCOTT Scale RC, directly translating to increased power transfer and improved efficiency, key characteristics you look for on a XC-ready hardtail. This stiffness zone also allows us to really optimize weight savings in the top half of the bike, the “lightweight zone”.

Minimized Hardware Weight

With the SCOTT Scale RC, hardware weight has almost halved, from 82g previously to 45g in total (HMX-SL). This was achieved through reducing the use of metal inserts including the chain guide, bottle cage inserts and a reduced amount of cable routing parts due to optimized routing in general.

Bottle Cage Inserts

With the SCOTT Scale RC we constantly reduced the amount of metal inserts wherever possible. Instead, lighter polymer versions were incorporated and can be found as the bottle cage inserts on the HMX-SL frames. These can be plugged completely, sitting flush on the frame due to a smart and flexible clipping mechanism.

Being able to set up the plugs and mounts needed provides riders with maximum flexibility and further contribute to the overall clean design.

Devil in the Details

Hollow Dropout Construction

The dropout feature an advanced, hollow construction, which allows the axle head to clamp against the inner surface of the dropout and leaves the head flush with the surface. This enables the lightest possible construction approach and a clean looking design from the outside. While being able to directly shave off 7.5g with the new dropout construction, the optimized design favors a narrower construction of the rear triangle area, which in turn enables a reduction of 20g in this area of the frame.

Simplified Brake Mount

The brake mount has been simplified by using post mount bosses, which embodies the most lightweight solution possible for this area of the frame. This construction shaves off an additional of 14g and contributes to the clear design.

Simpliefied and Lightweight Chain Guide

The chain guide has been simplified to sit flush against the frame. This very small bracket offers the most minimalistic construction. When not in use the bracket held against the inside the frame can be easily removed and the aperture can be covered completely with a smart plug offering a clean design.

Service Door

A small service door, which is accessible through a downtube cover, allows easy access to the interior of the frame without the need to remove the bottom bracket. Frame maintenance is made easy with regards to cable routing.

SYNCROS FRASER IC COMBO

The SCOTT Scale features an all-new Fraser iC combo from Syncros. Integrating the cables presents a number of unique problems and the Fraser was designed in part to address this. Syncros’s designers worked on the shape to allow the cables to flow under the bar and around the sides of the stem before disappearing into the headset with integrated plastic parts to keep it clean and efficient. This avoids bends or kinks in the cables and provides a minimalist front end.

All our bars and stems feature multiple options for computer, light and camera mounts both on top or under the bar.

With the SCOTT Scale, you can also adjust the head angle by .6 degrees slacker or steeper. This can be done without cutting cables or bleeding brakes. All you must do is disassemble the bar, rotate the headset cups 180 degrees, and reassemble.
